Our Story

A Story Over 100 Years in the Making

Born from a family tradition that was firmly established in Bavaria before moving to the United States, Limmer represents a unique combination of old fashioned family pride and humble dedication rooted in a devotion to craft.

Since 1919, Limmer has strived to provide the finest quality footwear possible.  Working from their own designs, the Limmer family carried the secrets of their footwear through several generations. Tyrolean walking shoes, the first US patented downhill ski boot, and the legendary custom hiking boots are just a few of the products that have been offered by Limmer.

Today, Limmer continues to produce handmade custom fit boots at our shop in Intervale, NH. We have also coordinated with Meindl, world class bootmakers and family friends in Bavaria, since the 1950's to provide Limmer designed boots, without the wait. All models use the highest quality materials and will set you up for success at work, and on all your next adventures.

Born into a family of bootmakers in the Bavarian town of Peterskirchen, Peter Limmer Sr. began learning the trade at the age of 9 from his father, Franz Xavier Limmer. Shoemaking is part of Limmer's DNA as Peter wife Maria, was also the daughter of a shoemaker. In 1919, Peter started his business in the Bavarian town of Vachendorf.
Master Bootmaker Certificate granted to Peter Limmer, Sr. The Meisterbreif is the highest professional qualification in crafts and is a state-approved certification in Germany. The education includes theoretical and practical training in the craft and also business and legal training, and includes the qualification to be allowed to train apprentices as well.
Peter Limmer, Sr. moved his young family from Bavaria to the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, MA. He quickly became renowned for crafting high end custom footwear and mountaineering/ski boots.
In 1939, Peter Limmer Sr. submitted his ski boot design to the United States Patent Office, and would be awarded the first US Ski Boot patent a few weeks later. From adventurers in the White Mountains to explorers in the Himalayas, customers put their full faith in Mr. Limmer's uniquely designed boots.
Missing the mountains of Bavaria, Peter found beauty a few hours north of Boston in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In 1950, the family moved to the Mount Washington Valley town of Intervale.
As demand increased, Mr. Limmer coordinated with family friends, and bootmakers in Bavaria, the Meindl's. What began by purchasing lederhosen in the 1950's, progressed into offering an off the shelf "Standard" boot produced by Meindl in 1970. When their father passed away in 1971, Peter Limmer Jr. and Francis Limmer carried on the generations long family tradition of bootmaking excellence.
Cousins Peter and Karl Limmer carry on the family bootmaking tradition and work closely with Meindl to expand the product line to include the Limmer Lightweight, Midweight, Oxford, and Walker.
Peter Limmer & Sons continues to craft high quality custom and "Off the Shelf" boots in Intervale, NH. Limmer Boot Company continues to coordinate with Meindl to provide Limmer signature designed boots from Fort Collins, CO. We are committed to providing the same high quality boots and excellence of service that Peter Limmer Sr. demanded.
